I'm flying back from Thailand via Malaysia next month and was wondering if I pick up an xbox out here, will I have compatability issues back in the UK?
If so, can such issues be circumvented by fair means or foul?

As far as I know, you won't be able to play UK games on it.

Not sure if you can chip it to do so, but if you chip it, you won't be able to play online.

In short, don't bother and buy a UK spec one instead :)

Malaysia and Thailand both use the PAL TV standard, same as UK, and use 240V, same as UK (although they do use a different wall socket, so a cheap power lead may need to be bought once back in the UK) so i see no reason why it shouldn't work. Try asking in a xbox 360 forum to know for certain.

If its significantly cheaper I would say go for it.

The main thing to watch out for is what DVD region the XBox is set up for. If it's region 2, then you're sorted - else, like said before, wait til you get back mate. Buy one over here.
