View Full Version : Vermella's Crit Build
Vermella

After much meditation on the various possibilities, this is final build I think I will be going for. The aim is high crits on fire. I know this aint great for MC but I dont plan on going there anytime soon. I hope this will work nice in pretty much any other instance as well as PvP.
This build gives me a base 13% crit chance with scorch and blast as well as a base 9% on fireball and 3% on arcane.
Any comments before I bite the bullet and pay 10 gold for a respec ?

If you want crits so bad might going 30 fire for Combustion be worth more then the +3% you get in the arcane tree? And the 10% damage bonus gained on fire spells to get combustion would help damage along to, the worst loss would be Presence of Mind that can be a life saver.
Its to bad you cant have both Presence of Mind and Combustion
If you still have a test copy why not make a mage on the test server and test it out there to save the cash :)
With that build (but nothing in arcane meditation since it doesn't stack with Mage Armor, maxed Arcane Mind) (which I used for about 1 month or so) is the best for pvp since scorch/fireblast is all your gonna have time for anyway.
With stuff like Robe of Volatile Power and 3-4 arcanist set pieces you will be very close to 20% crit on Scorc&Fireblast.
Combustion is horrible anyway.

OMG it doesn't stack with mage armor ??!!!
OMG it doesn't stack with mage armor ??!!!
Nope, it's bugged, it's supposed to, but it doesn't...

Arf I will have to spend 15 gold to respec then. Wonder is they will ever fix that ?
Btw I will be getting to 20% crit chance on blast and scorch by wednesday once I get "For the Horde!" complete and get the Eye of the Beast. With over 300 Int and a crit build I am at a "natural" 16% crit chance on scorch and blast. I already have Inventors's Focal Sword, and Circlet of the Ogre Magi (planning on Godrok's Gloves too). My long term goal is to get to 25% or so.
Oh joy, another trigger happy damage dealing mage that draws agro off the tank with consecutive large crits.
I always enjoy chasing mobs through a group as they make straight for the glass cannon and then proceed to kill him in two hits after my taunt was resisted.
:lmao:

I have had this build for quite some time Crazy and am aware of the dangers and adjust my play accordingly. You recently were with me in DM where I already had +17% crit (and +18% at the end when I got the crown ;) )...
Was it that tough ? Because the difference between +17 and +20 % crits isn't *that* enormous :)
Generally no. Never that much of a problem.
Most of the time it is easy to get agro back as the mage sees imminent death bearing down on them and they: -
1. check their fire
2. ice-block/nova
3. run screaming like little girls toward the tank :)
There are times, especially against bosses, when taunts are resisted, slowing AoE effects are in place or a knock-back effect clearing the agro list has occurred. If the tank is too far away then the mage has brought their own world of pain to their front door.
Then the mage dies. :lmao:

Bah I'm *already* dead :p
Seriously though, up until now I have had no aggro problems with any half decent tank, and I am always more careful when hurling large firey bolts at big bosses.

Hm why dont you go either 31/20 fire/arc or 20/31?
Also Combustion is useless for PvP.
As I see it:
You can either do the scorch/FB/IAE or the sheep/fireball pom Pyro/FB combo (with AP). The latter is good for unloading huge dam in secs, while the first is more about moving around and prolly better for multiple opponents.
But you *should* do either 31/20 or 20/31 ;)

I don't have cumbustion Wido...have a second look at my build.
31/20 or the reverse are not the only two builds and 28Arc/23Fire is often popular with PvP mages. In fact 28Arc/23Fire is perfect for scorch/FB/IAE ;)... actually it is *the* best build for scorch/FB/IAE imo.
Have a another look Wido. The only thing I prolly miss is the top level Arc talent, imo a very difficult talent to use properly...
Passive crit talents FTW !

Yes I know you dont have Combustion, that was for the other poster, I wasnt too clear about that ;)
Your build is good, but imo I would definately either put 3 more points in arcane to get AP, which is uber for pvp (burst dam), or I would drop some of the passive skills in arcane and get firepower and maybe blastwave.
Arcane instabillity is a great skill, but you pay alot for it...
7 points for 3% crit.
Also if your going for straight pvp, you should maybe consider getting arcane focus instead of imp arcane missiles. That means your sheep spell wont get resisted much, but more importantly it will last the full duration. This is important cause some people can dispel your two first sheeps, thus leaving a very short duration on your last sheep.
And finally as some other poster said you should remove your points in arcane meditation. I would put them in dampen magic, and arcane mind.
i have recently respecced to fire...currently i would say its about 25%-65% more damage in the same amount of time..for plain full out usefullness in pvp it still doesnt beat frost, but frost just didnt do enough damage.
in pve..as long as im not against elites it not much different..but more mana hungry on some mobs but about the same on others. in instances i still get very big numbers but also depressingly low ones too.
